Coffee is really just the excuse to be together.

Live Tuesdays · 9 AM · Instagram

Why the show exists

Good conversations, cut off at the knees.

It started at World of Coffee in San Diego, in my twenty-fifth year in this industry. You have the same conversation forty times across three days, and every one of them runs five or ten minutes before somebody gets pulled away.

The Excuse is the room where those conversations get to finish.

What we're doing here

Coffee is the medium. It was never the message.

Building bridges for the next generation into authentic specialty coffee.
Spotlighting the people and the thinking that shaped this industry.
Putting more handles on the trolley car, so the barrier to entry keeps dropping.
Modelling what real relationship and intentional community actually look like.

The ideas we keep coming back to

Frameworks that show up again and again.

Impress / Express

You can only authentically express what has genuinely impressed you. You cannot fake what you have not felt — which is why origin trips, real relationships and actual investment matter.

Compass vs. Clock

The clock is whatever is in front of you. The compass is why you're going. Most people are run by the clock. What if north never changes, and only your perspective does?

The Yoke

An ox yoke is carved for one specific animal — it can't be handed to another. We're each shaped by our experience for a particular purpose. Working in your own yoke means no friction, no injury, maximum output.

The Campfire

Everybody carries a log of truth, cut from their own experience. You don't defend your log. You lay it on the fire. Truth refined by friction becomes the coal that gives warmth and light.

The Trolley with Handles

A mission on a track, so there's direction — and enough handles hanging off it that people can grab on and come with you. The handles are your story, your why, your clarity.

The River and the Lake

A river flows, gives, and replenishes. A lake hoards, stagnates, and eventually goes toxic. I want to be a river.

The Relay Race of Love

Farmer, picker, processor, roaster, barista, guest — every one a link in a chain of invested care. A cup of coffee is a letter of love written across an entire supply chain.

I'm Supposed to Be Here

Not just welcome — anticipated. There was a gap here until you showed up. Your seat's ready, your table's ready, your cup's ready.

How the conversations go

No résumés. No credentials.

I don't want the bio. I want to know how somebody got like that — the origin story, the formation, the moment that bent the trajectory. What was that like? How did it change you? What did you do with it?

I'm not a host so much as a dialogue partner. I'll weave myself into it, riff on what you said, then hand it back. And I'll go first if that's what makes it safe to be honest.

Listen

Every episode, wherever you get podcasts.

The live show runs Tuesday mornings on Instagram. Every conversation lands in the podcast feed afterward, so you can catch the ones you missed.

Apple Podcasts and Spotify listings are pending feed approval — add the RSS link above to any podcast app in the meantime.

Without people, coffee is just a plant.
